Little Napier House aimed to provide a home for a growing family within the constraints of Paddington’s urban fabric. The two-storey heritage-listed house was 3.2m wide and 8m long – the land size 49 sqm. With the acquisition of the neighbouring property, the challenge became how to combine the two terraces to produce a house more than twice its original size. The design reduced the actual footprint of the building to allow for a usable rear courtyard which would engage directly with the living spaces – which themselves were united as an open-plan ground floor through the removal of internal walls.
